What you need to know are that there is two different types of listings. Paid and organic. This is the basic knowledge you need to understand to be successful. To keep it simple paid listings are obviously listings that you have to pay for. Organic listing are ones that you don't have to pay for.
Organic
What you want in your website is to be at the very first site that comes up when someone searches a certain keyword, a keyword is the phase that someone puts into Google. Both paid and organic can get to the top of the list but hey get there in different ways.
Paid listings are ones that you get from AdWords and it automatically goes to the top of the list, but people will be a lot more cautious when clicking on your site so it can be very risky and you could lose a fear bit of money. It could also be very beneficial and people could visit your site a lot more and you could make a nice profit.
Organic listings are simply when Google or another search engine thinks people will like your site and they put at the top of the list. If lots of people visit your site it will obviously rise in the rankings. People will almost always go for an organic over a paid but getting your site to the top can be quite challenging.
It's up to you to choose what you want to do, but as a little tip if you choose organic try to rank for keywords that are not as popular. Good Luck:)
