How to Make Your Own Fertilizer

Equipment needed:

· 1 medium sized bin about 25 litres, 5 gallon.

· Food processor.

· Oven or grill (optional).

· Kitchen foil.

· Oven trays.

· Scraps of wood to fit into the inside of the bin.

· A cutting tool i.e. a saw.

· Something heavy in my case I use bricks.

Product needed:

· Seaweed bubbly type preferably (more extract/juice comes out) 7 Kg, 14 Lb

· Food preservative (optional)

OK you've got the equipment and product together

· Cut out a scrap of wood that will fit in the bin a quarter of the way up from the floor.

· Put in the bricks to support the wood and create a new floor for the bin.

· Make sure the wood is not a tight fit.

· Liquidize the seaweed about 1 Kg, 2.2 lb at a time in the food processor.

· Use blades that will give you a rough finish (you don't want it too smooth).

· Add minced up seaweed to your upgraded bin.

· Repeat this process until your bin is full.

· Clean out the food processor as the seaweed contains a high level of salt

· Cut another scrap of wood to fit inside the top of the bid (about 5" from each side of the bin).

· Put the bin outside and load the bricks on top.

· Leave for 2 days.

The top of the bin (oven)

· Unpack the bricks and transport the seaweed into an oven tray with kitchen foil on.

· Place in a pre heated oven at 200°C, 392 °F.

· Cook for half an hour or until really crispy but not burnt.

· Grind up (optional).

· Add water 40 grams diluted with water makes up to 20 litres of seaweed liquid feed.

· Or add straight to the soil.

The top of the bin (without oven)

· Unpack the bricks and transport the seaweed straight onto the soil and mix in.

The bottom of the bin

· This is where the liquid extract will be.

· Add Food preservative or can place in freezer or use within 4 weeks and store in fridge.

· Add water in a watering can up to an amazing 80 to 1 mix

When it comes to feeding a hungry world inorganic fertilizers are unsurpassed in their ability to provide high levels of nutrients to plants in an efficient and economical manner. Understanding their differences helps us all to understand their appropriate uses.

Plants fed a strict diet of organic fertilizers are not necessarily healthier to eat than plants fed conventional or manufactured fertilizers. The nutritional quality of food is controlled by the amount and proportional balance of the nutrients fed to the plant, not by the source of the nutrient.

Organic

Fertilizers are made of organic or inorganic materials produced from natural or synthetic origins that are added to plant systems in order to supply one or more nutrients required for the plants healthy growth.

Organic vs. Inorganic Fertilizer

Fertilizers produced from organic materials contain carbon and either one or more of the essential plant nutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Animal manures, composts, sewage sludge and by-products from processed animal and vegetable materials are the most common organic fertilizers.

On the other hand carbon is not normally a component in the basic chemical structure of inorganic fertilizers. Usually referred to as manufactured, commercial, synthetic or mineral, inorganic fertilizers are produced from the naturally occurring substances of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Nitrogen (N), the most used nutrient in plants, comprises about 78% of the atmosphere. To produce nitrogen for fertilizers air is combined with methane from natural gas, and, under pressure and temperature, is converted to anhydrous ammonia which is the basis for most nitrogen fertilizers.

The fossilized remains of marine life deposited in the earth is the primary source of phosphorus (P), the second most used of the primary plant macro-nutrients, N P and K. Its conversion to usable form by the plant mimics natural processes occurring in the soil.

Evaporated oceans are the primary source of the salts from which potassium (K) is produced.

The primary difference between organic and inorganic fertilizers is the nutrient content. Organic fertilizers contain small concentrations of plant nutrients which means they must be applied at high rates in order to provide the nutrient needs of plants.

While it does contain nutrients, manures nutrient levels vary greatly from load to load. Nutrients in manure usually are not readily usable to the plants and are not properly balanced to provide all the nutrient needs the plant requires. Inorganic fertilizers on the other hand can be applied to the exact
levels or nutrients required by the plants.

Transportation costs for manure are relatively high because its nutrient content is relatively low so it is not economical for farm producers to move manure more than a few mile from the feedlot. Large amounts of organic fertilizers must be applied in order to meet the needs of the growing plants. A 50
pound bag of inorganic fertilizer is roughly equivalent to one ton of feedlot manure. In addition, applying excessive manure can create an environmental liability rather than a nutrient source.

Without the use of inorganic fertilizers farmers could not produce enough food to feed the world. The use of fertilizers accounts for an estimated 30-50% of crop yields in the U.S. Higher yields are common in developing areas of the world through the use of inorganic fertilizers. Still, crops use and remove
more nutrients from the soil than we return with fertilizers. It is a necessity to utilize inorganic fertilizers to replace the nutrients taken from the soil during crop growth. How to Use Chicken Manure in Your Garden For Fertilizer

Growing up in Central Florida, I was fortunate to have good year-round growing conditions. My grandparents were avid gardeners, and I remember the big jar painted white sitting on the counter to collect food for the compost pile. Once it was filled, my granddad would take it out to the compost bin and turn in, creating a rich soil. Although he composted, I was not introduced to chicken poop fertilizer until I was much older.

I was lucky to grow up with an awareness of composting, and once I moved and started a garden of my own, I had to investigate composting and fertilizing on my own, including chicken manure fertilizer. I went through quite a few plants that I "buried" instead of planted, since I did not take the time to invest in the right soil.

Organic

After a friend told me about chicken poop fertilizer as a great organic compound, I had to investigate on HOW to use, of all things, chicken poop! I had never heard of such a thing from my city grandparents, since ours was all turned food products mixed with dirt.

Upon reading up, I discovered that chicken manure fertilizer is the richest in nutrients of the animal manures. Because of the high content of nutrients, it's"hot manure". This means it will burn your plants if you just sprinkle it around. It works best to compost this manure before using it.

I had to learn how to compost with chicken poop fertilizer. It only took a few weeks for me to figure out what "burned" plants looked like from too much chicken manure fertilizer without enough other organic compounds.

In order to get your soil prepared with the chicken poop, add it to other organic ingredients. This can be vegetable and fruit leftovers, eggshells, coffee grounds, leaves and sticks. If you start in the fall and keep turning it, it will turn to rich looking dirt. Turn this into the ground when you till your garden, and the results with your chicken manure fertilizer will be amazing!

Experienced gardeners will tell you that you must use it when it is dry, not wet. Harvest the chicken poop yourself, or buy it from local farmers. If you raise the chickens anyway, then you might as well reap the benefits of the chicken poop.

As an aside, chickens also provide a great natural form of pest control and are very personable as pets. So if you have thought about using chicken poop fertilizer, there are more reasons than just the droppings to start a brood.

Now that I have incorporated chicken poop manure into my gardening, my potted plants and outdoor gardens have thrived. Try chicken manure fertilizer, just do it wisely to get the best results. Using Human Urine As A Liquid Fertilizer

OK, so are you over the shock now??? In the not so distant past, we didn't have the luxury of having a small room in the house where we could flush away our number ones and twos. But did you ever wonder how we managed before the water closet? Not that I want to get into the history of it, but let's just say that before the times of our current throw-away society, people thought of multiple uses for just about everything.

Well maybe you didn't know that human urine is the fastest acting, most excellent source of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium and some trace elements. Not only that, but we all have a constant, year round supply of it - and it's free! There's not a lot of effort involved in creating this wonderful organic liquid fertilizer.

Some men I know are more than happy to oblige a tree, bush or lawn (out of view, of course).

Did you know that many toilets use between 50 and 100 litres of water a day to flush around 1.5 litres of pee? And the high levels of nutrients in our effluent systems leads to the growth of algae, which ultimately causes the death of plants and animals throughout our waterways.

What are the advantages of using urine as an organic liquid fertilizer?

Just so that you know, fresh human urine is sterile (unless there is a urinary tract infection - this urine should not be used) and so free from bacteria.

I recommend that you dilute urine to 10-15 parts water to 1 part urine for application on plants in the growth stage. Dilute to 30-50 parts water to 1 part urine for use on pot plants as they are much more sensitive to fertilizers of any kind.

Trees, shrubs and lawn should cope well without dilution. Withhold the use of urine liquid fertilizer on all food plants at least two weeks before harvesting. Apply under fruiting plants, not directly on foliage.

Don't use urine older than 24hours on your plants as the urea turns into ammonia and will burn your plants. If it's not fresh, add it to your compost heap. Adding undiluted human urine to your compost heap will help heat it up quickly as it is an excellent activator and will add to the final nutrient value.

As far as antibiotics, vitamin supplements and other medications go, yes they will end up in your urine, but in such minute quantities that I believe to be negligible - especially when it is diluted.

So put this excellent source of free liquid fertilizer to good use in your garden, rather than add to the burden that we as humans cause to our environment.
